Alpine Environment - Educational Experience

Snowy Mountains learning opportunities can be added to your alpine experience.

National Parks and Wildlife Service offers several school excursion programs all year round at their Kosciuszko Education Centre. Engage your students in the Kosciuszko Gameshow, watch the ‘Spirit of the Snowy Mountains’ video featuring the natural and cultural heritage of the Australian Alps.

Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre – view a short film about the Snowy Hydro Scheme. Take your turn on the “power bikes” and see if you can pedal hard enough to power a TV, make some toast or boil a kettle.

Thredbo Summer Program

Thredbo offers a summer alpine program including (subject to weather)

    • Scenic Chairlift
    • Guided walk to the summit of Mount Kosciusko – with a Mt Kosciuszko Certificate
    • OR a shorter guided walk to Mt Kosciuszko Lookout (no certificate)
    • Bobsled (1 ride)
    • Thredbo Leisure Centre Pool and Sports Hall
  • Optional upgrade: include the inflatable slide at extra cost (Note: Children aged 12 years and under are required to perform a 25m swim test and must be over 1.20m tall)

Notes:

  • Blizzards and cold winds at below zero temperatures are not uncommon in summer in the mountains. These conditions can be enjoyed if people are properly prepared.
  • It is essential that all student and teachers have waterproof gear as the weather conditions in the mountains can change rapidly.
  • The guides make the final decision on whether anyone is not properly equipped for the day, which may result in a student having to miss an activity.
