Sydney offers your students the opportunity to explore first-hand, significant sites along with their stories of British Colonisation. Many of the venues use a combination of role play, artefacts, guided tours, costumes and storytelling to engage your students while bringing British Colonisation history to life.
Located on the western shoreline of Sydney Cove, The Rocks holds a unique place in Sydney’s colonial history and is considered to be the birthplace of European Australia. In January 1788 a fleet of 11 British ships safely moored in Sydney Cove. The fleet carried a human cargo of convict exiles doomed to live out their prison terms in this alien land and so began the fascinating story of the founding of a nation. On this rocky peninsula, convicts replaced the traditional way of life of the Indigenous inhabitants, the Cadigal people.
There are many venues and activities to include in your British Colonisation itinerary:
Dressed in costume, walk the cobblestone laneways in The Rocks becoming immersed in the stories of the characters and events of early Sydney life. “Our tours are conducted in a safe and stimulating environment by our qualified team of guides in the preserved 19th Century historic landscape of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood, The Rocks. With our guides’ your students will be encouraged to:
Housed in a restored 1850s sandstone warehouse, The Rocks Discovery Museum is home to a unique collection of images and archaeological artefacts found in The Rocks. The exhibits are filled with interactive fun, using touch screens, audio and visual elements to bring the history of the area alive. Learn about the area’s traditional custodians, the establishment of the English colony and the time when sailors, whalers and traders made The Rocks their home; through to the 1970s union-led protests which preserved this unique part of Sydney for future generations to explore and enjoy.
Currently closed for renovation, re-opening sometime in 2020
What was everyday life like for the convicts of Hyde Park Barracks? Who were they? Why were they sent there? What were their routines, rations and rules, and were these rules always followed? Students discover the answers through the stories of real convicts who lived at the barracks. Investigating historic images, records and artefacts, and exploring the site, students develop an understanding of colonial life in Sydney.
